Cosipar is a large pig iron maker located at the city of Maraba, South of Para State, near the Amazon Forest.
In its supply chain Cosipar works with the local charcoal industry, a sector with significant environmental and labour issues. Many of the farms in Cosipar's region are suspected to use forced labour.
Therefore ABN-Amro Bank of Brazil advised Cosipar to improve the managment system for its external and internal social performance. In 2007 the company decided to implement a SA8000 system. With a SA 8000 Certificate Cosipar gets a stronger position on the market, proving the company's compliance with national and international requirements in the social field.
BSD started to work for Cosipar doing a social audit and a Gap Analysis against the requirements of SA8000. Afterwards an efficient integration of a standard conform management system into the company's existing organisation follows. The efforts made since February 2008 are leading to a certifiable stage in 2009.
