Public Private Partnership in Fairtrade Coffee sector
Consumer demand for high-quality Fairtrade coffee is strong and steadily growing.
In a Public Private Partnership the US development organisation USAID, supermarket chain Walmart, US Fairtrade organisation Transfair USA and Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises Sebrae have partnered and contracted BSD Consulting Brazil.
The project consists of three components
- Increasing the supply of high quality coffee through infrastructure improvements, quality management training and market driven rewards for quality improvements.
- Improving business efficiency at the cooperative level through training and experience sharing among cooperatives and with business partners in the supply chain.
- Building the market, strengthening the supply chain and bringing farmers into the marketing process.
5000 farming families in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo are working with the project to improve their income. These farmers are organised into 10 cooperatives that are currently Fairtrade certified.
